In July, we lost 131,000 jobs in the U.S. Another 181,000 people simply stopped looking for a job.
Last week, one of the posts here described the plight of one woman who had lost her job, couldn't find a new job, and had run out of unemployment benefits.
Here is a story from the other side, the employer's side.
I have a friend who has a small physical therapy practice in San Clemente, California. At the most, there are less than a half dozen employees. One of jobs is receptionist, telephone answering, scheduling, re-scheduling, insurance company billing and verification, and general utility player. Last month, the person holding that job left because of a family problem.
To find a replacement, the pt owner ran a simple ad in the Orange County, California issue of Craig's List.
On the first day, she received 250 applications and by the time the notice expired on Wednesday, there were over 500 applications.
Most of the applicants were vastly over qualified with college degrees (not required) in accounting, psychology, sports medicine, etc. etc. and all had relevant experience.
When you think about the reality of that episode, remember that Larry Summers, Obama's economic guru, insists that anyone who is unemployed is just lazy!!
It is becoming increasing clear that Wall Street bankers are not the only threat to the survival of the United States of America.
